How to prepare for adopting a Blue Great Dane Puppy
At Great Lake Danes, we are dedicated to helping families welcome a new pet to their homes and providing them with the resources to adjust to pet ownership life. We understand that it can be an adjustment for the first few months and want to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible. There are a few things families should take note of before bringing home a puppy, and we break down a few of the most important things to have in preparation for the arrival of your new companion. Below are a few of the things you need to keep in mind when bringing a Great Dane puppy home.
What to expect when your Great Dane puppy leaves our farm
When your puppy leaves the farm, you can have peace of mind knowing that they have the proper paperwork, health records, training, and socialization. Our farm takes every measure to make the process easy. Each puppy goes up to date on its vaccinations and wormings along with a spay or neuter contract. Great Danes, along with other larger dog breeds, are prone to hip issues. Great Lake Danes guarantees hips against any genetic defects for 26 months of the puppy's life. Our puppies are raised with constant handling from birth and leave the farm with excellent socialization skills. From AKC papers to food, grooming, supplements for healthy immune systems, and more, we take care of everything. We provide everything you need to ensure an excellent start for you new family friend.
Items to bring with you when you pick up your Great Dane puppy
Picking up your puppy from the farm is an exciting day. When you arrive at the Great Lake Danes farm, we recommend that you bring a few essential items to make the ride home as smooth as possible. Most importantly, you will want to bring towels and cleaning supplies with you, as puppies often get car sick. Along with cleaning supplies, it's best to bring a blanket with you that we can put the mother and litter's scent, so your puppy will have comfort when separated the first night. Many new pet owners opt to hold their puppy on the way home, but we recommend a container 18 inches in height if you wish to bring a crate. All of these items will help your new puppy adjust to leaving the farm and joining your family. We are here to assist you throughout the adoption process.
What items should you have at home?
Getting a new puppy is an exciting time, and the family at Great Lake Danes is thrilled to find loving homes for our Blue Great Dane puppies. You should have a few items at home so your new friend will feel comfortable after leaving the farm. There are a few essential items that will make the transition easier for your new Great Dane puppy. We break them down below:

-
Food: Your Great Dane's diet plays a significant role in their health, and we recommend keeping your Great Dane puppy on an adult formula of food. The protein has to be between 18-26%. Once you are home, we suggest 1 ¼ - 2 cups of food a day between two meals.
-
Treats for training: Great Dane's are people pleasers, and treats will make the training process easier.
-
Crate: A crate allows your puppy to have a space of their own where they feel sale. Crate training is also especially useful when house training. For an adult size crate, we use crates from 26-32 inches high.
-
Toys: Puppies need toys to engage and build relationships. De-stuffed toys are recommended. You can also use squeaker toys under supervision.
-
Bowls for food and water: You will need bowls for them to eat and drink. We suggest not using raised food dishes. They should eat lower, as they would in nature.
-
Pillows and blankets: Blankets and pillows can offer comfort and make it easier for them to adjust to their new home.
